19 Shocking Movie Character Reveals

in Now You See Mewhen it was revealed that Dylan was behind everything:

I went into this movie not expecting it to even be good, so this plot twist straight-up blew my mind.

in screamwhen Billy and Stu were revealed to be the killers:

Dimension Films

Stu was almost more surprising to me here. “Surprise, Sidney” is an iconic line that’ll go down in horror film history.

in Iron Manwhen Obediah was revealed to be the villain:

The dude was a bit sketch, but come on!!! Hiring a guy to kill the man who is like a son to you??? Wild.

in Spider-Man: Far From Homewhen Mysterio was revealed to be Quentin Beck, a former Stark Industries employee without any superpowers:

Sony Pictures Releasing

I love that this movie sort of reexamined the Stark legacy and how people are idolized after death. I truly wasn’t expecting Mysterio to be the villain, so this was a really fun twist, and Jake Gyllenhaal played it so well and looked like he was having so much fun.

in psychowhen Marion’s killer/Norman’s mother was revealed to be Norman:

in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Backwhen Darth Vader revealed himself to be Luke’s father:

I mean, come on. This is probably the best movie character reveal of all time.

in Wonder Womanwhen Sir Patrick was revealed to be Ares:

Warner Bros. pictures

I know some people didn’t like this one, but I thought it was shocking, especially because the movie was setting up that there was no Ares after all and humans were just bad, lol.

in Frozenwhen Hans revealed himself to be the villain:

This felt so shocking for a Disney film in the best way. It was such a reversal of expectations!

in Captain America: The Winter Soldierwhen the Winter Soldier was revealed to be Bucky:

Okay, to be honest, by the time I saw this, I knew about it. It was still awesome, though.

in Shutter Islandwhen it was revealed that Teddy was actually Andrew Laeddis, a murderer and psychiatric patient:

Paramount Pictures

How did Leo DiCaprio not win an Oscar for this???

in Crazy, Stupid, Lovewhen it was revealed that Hannah was “Nana” — aka Cal and Emily’s daughter:

Warner Bros. pictures

I’m obsessed with the reveal. It’s SUCH a shock for a rom-com, and it’s pulled off perfectly.

in Spider-Man: Homecomingwhen Vulture was revealed to be Liz’s dad:

The spider man low-key franchise pulls off some of the best Marvel twists, even if they only have ramifications for that one film and not the larger MCU. This was such a great one that wayyy increased the personal stakes for Peter and overall tension in the following scenes.

in sawwhen Jigsaw revealed himself to Adam as the apparent corpse they’d seen in the beginning:

Lions Gate Entertainment

I gotta hand it to saw — the first movie’s twist was pretty darn clever. It’s super shocking and gives the movie a great, unique ending that still feels on par with the rest of the film.

in The Usual Suspectswhen Verbal was revealed to be Keyser Söze:

Gramercy Pictures

Another of the best character reveals of all time, and that’s all I really need to say.

in orphanwhen it was revealed that Esther was actually a 33-year-old woman:

Warner Bros. pictures

SO CREEPY and so well done visually. Just a great twist all around.

in Fight Clubwhen it was revealed that Tyler and the Narrator were the same person:

20th Century Fox

Another of the all-time best reveals.

in The Prestigewhen Angier discovered that Borden was actually a set of twins:

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution / Warner Bros. pictures

This is such an underrated movie, and the final twist is just spectacular — and I normally don’t even like twin reveals. If you haven’t seen it, go watch it right now.

in Harry Potterwhen Snape revealed himself to be a Death Eater by killing Dumbledore:

Warner Bros.

Yes, this happened in the books first, so it wasn’t a surprise to anyone who’d read them. Still, it was well done and shocking!!!

And finally, when Snape actually revealed himself to be a double agent/a good guy after all:

Warner Bros.

Ditto about the books, but I actually really loved the way they did this in the film (though I’m not a Snape fan).
