US Open 2022 picks, top predictions, field, best bets, odds: Golf expert loves Scottie Scheffler

Many of the PGA Tour’s top players come in red-hot for the year’s third major, the 2022 US Open, which tees off Thursday at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. Rory McIlroy has won four major titles, his last dele in 2014, but he remains one of the top all-around players on tour. He was the runner-up at the Masters and won the RBC Canadian Open last week for his second victory of the season. McIlroy enters as the 10-1 favorite in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2022 US Open odds. Justin Thomas (11-1), Scottie Scheffler (12-1), Jon Rahm (14-1) and Cameron Smith (18-1) are also top contenders in the 2022 US Open field, while Sam Burns (25-1) is among a large group at 25-1 or shorter.

Numerous other players with multiple major championships are part of the US Open 2022 field, including Jordan Spieth (22-1), Brooks Koepka (35-1) and Phil Mickelson (150-1). Before making any 2022 US Open picks or PGA Tour predictions, you need to see what proven golf insider Sal Johnson has to say.

The esteemed golf insider has been around the game for many years and knows what it takes to win on the PGA Tour. Before the PGA Championship, Johnson predicted that if Thomas made his putts he could definitely win. Thomas had his best week of the season on the greens, gaining more than 1.5 strokes putting to rank second in the field. The result? He beat Will Zalatoris in a playoff to win his second PGA Championship.

In his previous set of predictions for SportsLine, he nailed the Masters for the third time in four years. Johnson backed Scheffler, saying he was “on a run where he has been hard to beat, and I see it rolling on at Augusta National.” The 25-year-old got his fourth victory of the season.

Now Johnson, the first producer of “Inside the PGA Tour” and longtime ABC Sports golf producer who worked with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, has released his highly confident 2022 US Open picks. The picks from the founder of GOLFstats.com, the world’s top golf statistics database, will definitely surprise you. You can only see them at SportsLine.

Top 2022 US Open expert picks

One shocking choice from Johnson: He is fading Viktor Hovland, even though the Norwegian is among the top 10 players in the world. He is priced at 22-1 at Caesars and has six worldwide wins at age 24. He has missed one cut this season and finished outside the top 50 once. But the latter came in his most recent event, the Memorial, and he has not finished in the top 10 since March. He also has failed to crack the top 10 in his first 10 majors. Hovland is strong off the tee, on approach and putting, but has been horrible around the green (202nd in strokes gained).

Meanwhile, Johnson believes Scheffler’s all-around game should be a perfect fit for Brookline, but he is concerned about a recent “slump.” Of course, a slump for Scheffler is going three weeks without a victory. He had four over a six-event span that ended with his Masters victory in April. He has finished 15th or lower in all but one event since then. The outlier was nearly a victory, as he lost to Sam Burns in a playoff at the Charles Schwab. The 25-year-old hits the greens (second in regulation) and makes putts (fifth in putting average), so he can contend anywhere.

The expert has also been tuned in to Spieth’s resurgence over the past two seasons and knows he is capable of big moments. His putter has been an issue most of the year, but has improved in recent weeks. He was sixth in the field in strokes gained by putting The Memorial in his last outing, but his irons have gone downhill in recent weeks. Johnson knows if Spieth puts it all together at once, he will be right in the mix. The three-time major champion and 2015 US Open winner has two victories and four other top-three finishes over the past two seasons.

How to make 2022 US Open golf picks

Johnson is very high on a massive long shot who comes into the US Open at more than 50-1. Johnson calls this golfer “one of the most underrated players on the PGA Tour.” His iron play is among the best on tour, and the expert knows if this player gets going around the greens he could pull off a stunner.
